1. A Personal Caregiver assists with a Registered Qualifying Patient’s (Patient’s) medical use of marijuana.

It’s a Personal Caregiver’s responsibility to assist with a Patient’s medical use of marijuana. Duties may include:

2. Transporting a Patient to and from a Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MTC).
3. Obtaining and transporting marijuana from an MTC on behalf of a Patient.
4. Cultivating marijuana on behalf of a Patient who has obtained a Hardship Cultivation Registration.
5. Preparing marijuana for consumption by a Patient.
6. Administering marijuana to a Patient.

Please note: The Commission has not yet implemented the Hardship Cultivation Registration program. The Commission is committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure this program upholds patients’ rights and maintains public health and safety. 2. Caregivers may possess up to 10 ounces of medical marijuana.

Personal Caregivers are allowed to possess and obtain marijuana for a Patient in their care, so long as the caregiver possesses no more than a 60-day supply—up to 10 ounces of cannabis or cannabis-infused products.

3. Carry the registration card.

A Personal Caregiver must carry their registration card at all times while in possession of marijuana.

4. Caregivers may not receive compensation from the Patient.

A Personal Caregiver may not receive payment or other compensation from the Patient for services related to Medical Marijuana. Caregivers who are employees of a healthcare facility or service may not receive payment or compensation beyond their regular wages for duties as a medical marijuana caregiver.

5. Caregivers cannot sell a Patients’ marijuana.

A Personal Caregiver may not sell or divert marijuana designated for a Patient.

6. Caregivers may not consume the Patients’ marijuana products.

A Personal Caregiver may not use or consume cannabis or cannabis-infused products that are designated for the Patient.

7. A Personal Caregivers cannot have been convicted of a drug crime.

8. Caregivers can serve up to five Patients at a time.

If a Personal Caregiver wants to serve more than five patients, the Personal Caregiver must seek a waiver pursuant to 935 CMR 501.850.

9. Renew caregiver status annually and online.

A Personal Caregiver’s registration expires annually on the anniversary date of registration. The easiest and fastest way to renew is via the Medical Use of Marijuana Program Online System (Online System)  within 60 days of the expiration date. A new registration card will be sent upon successful renewal in the program. The Patient must also maintain an active certification from their healthcare provider in order for the Caregiver to renew.

10. Keep account information up-to-date.

Changes to a caregiver’s name, contact details, or other account information must be made within five days of the change. The fastest and easiest way to make changes is online.
