How do I find a doctor who can certify me as a Certified Patient? 

Ask your doctor or healthcare provider if they are a Certifying Health Care Provider with the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program. 

Can my doctor or health care provider write a prescription for medical marijuana? 

Your doctor may prescribe medical marijuana only if they are a Certifying Health Care Provider with the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program. Learn more 

Are medical marijuana purchases covered by insurance?

No. 

What forms of payment are accepted at marijuana retailers?

You may pay with cash or a debit card. Credit cards are not accepted. Note: Some debit card purchases may be processed as a “cashless ATM” and may be subject to a fee by your bank or card issuer. 

Where do medical marijuana products come from? 

All medical marijuana products sold in Massachusetts are naturally grown and processed in approved cultivation and processing facilities throughout the Commonwealth. 

Are medical marijuana products tested? 

Massachusetts laws on testing marijuana products are among the most stringent in the United States. All marijuana products grown in the Commonwealth are rigorously tested for pesticides, metals, and other contaminants. 

Can I change my Personal Caregiver? 

Yes. Your new Caregiver will need to apply for a registration card and your old Caregiver will have to surrender their registration card.

What is Initial Access?

Initial Access certification allows a newly Registered Qualifying Patient (Patient) to enter a Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MTC). Initial Access allows Patients to receive a limited 14-day supply of marijuana for media use (the equivalent of 2.5 ounces for a two-week period). The Patient’s Health Care Provider may certify if a Patient requires a different amount. Learn more. 

What happens if my Program registration card expires before I receive a new one?

When your renewal Program registration card application is approved, you will be able to print out a temporary Program registration card. You will receive your new Program registration card in the mail approximately two weeks following approval. 

What is the URL address for the Medical Use of Marijuana Program Online System?

The URL address is https://patient.massciportal.com.

Is there a fee required to obtain a Program registration card?

There is no fee to obtain a Program registration card. However, there is a $10 fee for a replacement card. If the fee poses a Verified Financial Hardship, the Qualifying Patient may request a waiver of the fee in a form and manner determined by the Commission.

What is the cost to obtain a medical marijuana certification from a Certifying Health Care Provider?

All fees to obtain certification are set by Certifying Health Care Providers.

How can I have my medical marijuana allotment increased?

Contact your Certifying Health Care Provider to review your allotment amount and medical condition.

Why do I have to submit a proof of residency with my application?

The Medical Use of Marijuana Program Online System is designed to automatically approve Program registration card applications when you submit a Massachusetts driver’s license and proof of residency document.
